Perhaps cultivated by the Chinese about the Canal Zone as a tonic. It is supposed to be aphrodisiac and to impart long life. A special variety was the basis of a tea drunk by Prof. Li Chung Yon, who reputedly lived 265 years and married 24 times. The leaves are eaten raw or steamed with rice.
